It sounds like the setup for a the kind of joke you’d read on a popsicle stick, but how does a dog with two noses smell? According to his owner, really well.
“It appears to come in handy when he is searching for his old chewed up ball!” Todd Ray wrote in the description of a YouTube video about his rescue dog, Toby.
Other than having twice as many noses as other dogs, Toby is a perfectly healthy Australian Shepherd.
When Ray first learned about Toby, the dog was with a Fresno, California, rescue organization that was considering putting the animal to sleep. Ray — who has a fascination with the unusual — adopted Toby and has since added him to the Venice Beach Freakshow, which he owns. (Ray himself holds a Guinness World Record for having the world’s largest collection of two-headed animals).
“I’m fascinated by weird animals’ beautiful differences and by the magical lessons that they teach us,” he told Fly News. “The uniqueness of their forms show us that normal doesn’t exist.”
He describes 2-year-old Toby as “the sweetest dog on earth,” and was astounded that he might’ve been put down simply because he had a pair of noses. So how does a two-nosed dog smell? We’re just glad he still can.
