Making Sure Dogs Get Along

Many shelters will ask you to take in other pets to see if a potential adoptee is a good fit.

Q. Will my pets like my shelter dog?
A. Dogs are pack animals by nature and tend to get along once their “status” is established. Many dogs that are adopted come from shelters that house a very large number of dogs. For this reason, the shelter or rescue group will be able to help you identify the dog that will get along with your pets since they have already identified the dogs that may not get along together in their shelter. Keep in mind that the shelter environment is different from your home. Most shelters and rescues will encourage you to take your dog in to meet the potential newcomer. Be sure to call the shelter to confirm the meeting.
