For over 20 years, the American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen test has been the gold standard of dog-training excellence. Dogs who pass the test are well-behaved, exemplary members of the canine community.
To help owners help their dogs prepare, the new book, “Citizen Canine: Ten Essential Skills Every Well-Mannered Dog Should Know” by Mary R. Burch, teaches owners about the training techniques that will allow their dog to ace the test.
To achieve success in the CGC program, dogs must complete 10 tasks. The tasks include accepting a friendly stranger, walking through a crowd, performing Sit and Down on command and staying in place, among others.
Though teaching your dog to complete these tasks can seem overwhelming, the book devotes a chapter to each skill. Owners learn about the specific test items, how to help your dog, everyday exercises you can do to incorporate the behavior and how each skill can be useful in everyday life. It also includes chapters on responsible dog ownership, finding testing in your area, and how your dog can advance further in the AKC via sports competitions.
Owners looking to improve their bond with their dog – and teach him valuable skills – will enjoy this book.
