Many companion animals in Louisiana remain homeless in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. To help local animal shelters and rescue groups continue to provide aid to the cats and dogs affected by the hurricane, the ASPCA and the Humane Society of the United States have donated customized vans to transport the animals.
Shelters receiving the animal transport vehicles include St. John the Baptist Parish Animal Shelter, Lafayette Parish Animal Shelter and PAWS of Placquemines Parish. The vans were customized to meet the individual requirements of each shelter. Each unit will have special animal housing with air-conditioning, as well as larger cabs designed to house equipment. The first van was delivered to St. John the Baptist Parish Animal Shelter in September.
Contributing to this special donation were Mavron, Inc., Deerskin Manufacturing, Inc. and Jones Trailer Company. These companies made the necessary modifications for the vehicles to meet each shelter’s requirements.
