Life With Some Dog Breeds Might Not Be Like In The Movies

Dog breed clubs rally to remind fans to learn before they leap into dog ownership.

Following the success of two new Disney movies featuring purebred dogs The Shaggy Dog and 8 Below the American Kennel Club is reminding potential pet owners to carefully research a dogs breed to ensure the animal is compatible with their lifestyle.

The Shaggy Dog features a Bearded Collie, while 8 Below showcases a dog-sled team of Siberian Huskies.

The AKC says Hollywood films often feature purebred dogs in leading roles from Rin Tin Tin to Lassie to 101 Dalmatians but that doesn’t always mean these breeds will fit well into real-life homes.

Seeing and enjoying a dog on the big screen is one thing, but people need to realize that owning that breed may be a completely different experience, said Lisa Peterson, the AKCs communications director. Those who want to add a dog to their family need to understand the commitment involved in owning a dog, select a breed that fits their lifestyle, and learn as much as possible about the different breeds before contacting a reputable breeder.

Dog ownership in America has often increased after the release of popular dog movies. That is why the AKC has now joined with the Siberian Husky Club of America, Inc., and the Bearded Collie Club of America, Inc., to help educate the public.
