Lake Tanganyika is a large lake in Africa with more than 250 species of cichlid fish.

Location and Geography: Lake Tanganyika is located in Africa across four coutnries: Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tanzania and Zambia. The 420-mile-long lake is mostly surrounded by mountains, and it has both rocky and sandy coastlines.

Size: It is the sixth largest lake in the world in terms of surface area, about 12,700 square miles, and third in total volume, 4,500 cubic miles. The lake is about 40 miles wide at its widest point.

Depth: Down to 4,700 feet, making it the second deepest lake in the world
