“Have you ever seen a pet’s face and just known they were meant to be yours?”

That’s how a Facebook post by Orange County Animal Services in Orlando, Florida, read November 12 when it shared the story of Ricky the kitten and the couple who adopted him. The little black cat was due to be put down in short time but a husband and wife a thousand miles away wouldn’t let that happen.

Therese Miata saw Ricky’s picture on Instagram and felt a connection; she talked to husband Thomas Sakalis and they decided to save Ricky from euthanasia, WFTV9 reports. These two had a couple of hurdles to the plan, the first being how to get from New York to Orlando in time to adopt Ricky.

With luck, they managed to get on a flight down on the very last day that Ricky was up for adoption. Then the second hurdle appeared: Ricky had an upper respiratory infection, which meant he couldn’t fly on a plane to his new home.

Not letting that get in the way, the couple got a car to drive all the way back home with their newest addition. According to comments on the Instagram post where Miata first saw Ricky, she will be fostering the kitten until a forever home can be found.

Something about that picture made her travel 1,000 miles, even if only to have him for a short time. Love at first sight might really be possible.
