Your kittens soft, springy fur is the result of more than 40 years of hard work by dedicated breeders, beginning with the cat lovers who discovered the first unusual kitten.

That first little wirehair was found in a litter of barn cats in upstate New York in 1966. The local cat lover, Joan OShea, was invited to take a look at the unusual kitten. She believed the new mutation could be the beginnings of a new breed and decided to try to reproduce the unusual coat. The kitten was bred to his sister, which resulted in more kinky-coated kittens. The breed was on its way!

The Cat Fanciers Association accepted the breed for registration in 1967, and accepted it for championship competition in 1978. Today, the breed has a loyal following in the United States, Europe and Japan.
