With the start of China’s Yulin Dog Meat Festival, thousands of dogs and cats will be tortured, killed, and eaten during a 10 day span.
Celebrities and musicians have come together in a public service announcement denouncing the practice of torturing these animals to death in the false belief that the meat of a tortured animal tastes better and has “better health benefits.”
“In the dog meat industry, this trade is built upon the belief that if you torture and abuse the animal, it makes the meat taste better or that it gives health benefits to whoever eats it,” Marc Ching, founder of the Animal Hope and Wellness Foundation said in the PSA. “Whether or not you think that it is something to be eaten or on the menu, cruelty and torture and violence… it is wrong.”
The Animal Hope and Wellness Foundation launched its Compassion Project PSA on YouTube June 17. The PSA features several celebrities who in the PSA implore the industry to stop the torture. Matt Damon, Joaquin Phoenix, Lady Gaga and Tony Kanal are just a few of the actors and musicians who have lent their time in an effort to raise awareness of the practice of torturing dogs in Asia before killing them for their meat.
Be warned, the PSA is gut-wrenching, as the actors and celebrities who implore the industry to stop the torture are clearly disturbed by the practice.
