Jack Russell Terrier Wins Spot on Rescue Calendar

A dog who was mistreated and malnourished a year ago wins a spot on the rescue calendar’s cover.

This time last year Jack Russell Terrier Baxter was foraging for food behind an Alabama restaurant, the links of a metal choke collar embedded in his neck.

Now the spunky dog, who underwent surgery to have the chain removed, has a brand-new home with Dorothy Clayton of Madison, Ala., and a spot on the cover of the Greater Huntsville Humane Society’s 2008 “Hot Dogs, Cool Cats” calendar.

Baxter earned a spot on the cover by winning a contest that collected donations with every vote. The fundraiser brought in nearly $58,000 to the humane society – $8,000 more than last year.

“We just want to thank everyone in the community for coming out for this fun event,” says fundraising chairwoman Susan Baldaia. She says every vote and donation “helps the humane society to rescue and provide medical attention to each and every animal that comes through our doors.”

Second place went to Standard Schnauzers Sadie and Sassie, owned by Theresa and Tim Fields of Huntsville.
