<i>Salmonella</i> Suspected in Latest Dog Food Recall

Due to possible <i>Salmonella</i> contamination, some of Wal-Mart’s Ol’Roy dry food has been added to the dog food recall.

Some of Wal-Mart’s Ol’Roy Complete Nutrition dry dog food is being recalled by its manufacturer Doane Pet Care of Manassas, Va., due to possible contamination with Salmonella.

Last night the company recalled a single lot of 55-pound “bonus” bags of the dry dog food after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration found the product contaminated with Salmonella, a bacteria that can cause diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps in humans and pets.

The recalled dog food bears the following code and information:

Product: Ol’ Roy Complete Nutrition dry dog food
Size: 55-pound bonus bag
UPC Code: 6 05388 72076 4
Lot Number: 04 0735 1
“Best By” Date: Apr 13 ’08
“Best By” Date Location: Back of bag

The recalled dog food was produced at one facility in Manassas and distributed solely to 69 Wal-Mart stores, in Maryland, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia (40 stores affected) and West Virginia via two distribution centers in Virginia, the company said in a statement. A full listing of the stores that received the potentially contaminated product can be found at www.doanepetcare.com/recall/stores.html, but the product UPC was blocked from sale at all locations as part of the dog food recall.

Anyone who has purchased the recalled dog food product should stop feeding it to pets immediately and return the empty bag to the store for a full refund, the company said. Recalled product should be disposed of in a manner so that no other person or animal comes in contact with it. Pet owners with questions on the dog food recall can call Doane Pet Care at (800) 624-7387 or visit its website at www.doanepetcare.com.

Independent testing of duplicated product samples did not turn up Salmonella, nor have any illnesses at its plants or elsewhere been reported, the company said.
