Q. Do female dogs have periods just like human beings? If so, is it painful or is there any blood discharge?
A. All fertile female mammals have estrus cycles, but there are species differences in those “periods.” Most female dogs have two cycles per year, though some may have three, and some have only one. There is a small amount of blood discharged at that time, but most dogs show no signs of pain during their seasonal cycles. However, there are often some behavioral changes associated with these times, including an increased tendency to guard their resting areas and their toys or other belongings.
