Into the Sunset Pet Transition Center, a modern pet hospice in San Diego, Calif., opens its doors to help terminally ill pets live out their lives with as little pain as possible.
The loss of a pet can be a truly devastating experience. As pets become more of an integral part of the family unit, dealing with loss can be for many, like the death of a human family member. From ensuring they are living comfortably and to knowing how and when it’s time to say goodbye, many owners struggle with making end of life choices for a beloved pet.
After after losing their five-year-old rescued chocolate Labrador, Lily, to terminal lymphoma founders Vivianne Villanueva, CPLP and her husband, Dr. Sarit Dhupa BVSc. saw a need for a new type of animal care facility. The couple opened Into the Sunset to help others deal with the difficult process of losing a pet from beginning to end.
Into the Sunset closely mirrors human hospice by offering services dedicated to making a pet comfortable as they enter the final stages of life, as well as counseling to assist pet parents with coping with the imminent loss of a pet.
Hoping to make the process less clinical, Into the Sunset’s staff offers what many veterinarians offer, in a dedicated facility. Their services range from veterinary acupuncture, homeopathy, food therapy, high level pain management, to medical daycare, grief counseling, cremation services and celebration of life ceremonies.
