In a Class of His Own

Carla Nickerson had no idea what lay in store for her. I was 22 years old and working at the phone company in Denver. And every morning on my way into work, I saw this woman walking her two Miniature Schnauzers, she recalls. They looked so happy, interacting with their owner, and she seemed to be having so much fun with them that I had to find out more.

Three decades later, Nickersons life has been overrun by the smallest of the German dogs named for their distinctive muzzles or schnozzes. A breeder, groomer, and exhibitor of Miniature Schnauzers in Pocatello, Idaho, Nickerson explains why: They’re tough little dogs. They’re active, but not hyperactive; they like to play. They’re just a lot of fun.
