The Hydor Slim Skim Nano Internal Protein Skimmer is an excellent, efficient compact protein skimmer for use in small marine tanks. It takes up very little tank space, as it is only 12 inches tall with a 3-inch-by-3.5-inch footprint; there is also a slightly bigger model, which is 17.5 inches tall.
Hydor claims that the Slim Skim Nano is compact, easy to install and position, and that it will efficiently provide protein skimming for small marine tanks. Hydor also claims that it is easy to adjust and consumes little power.
I set up a 20-gallon high with water from an existing tank, live rock from that same tank and the Hydor Slim Skim Nano as the only filtration. I stocked the tank with two tank-raised ocellaris clownfish, an orchid dottyback, and some snails and hermit crabs. I ran the tank for two months, topping off with reverse-osmosis water as needed; I did one water change of 20 percent during the test period.
The Hydor Slim Skim Nano did an excellent job of removing organics from the test tank. The water was always crystal clear, and the fish and inverts thrived. I especially liked how easy it was to install and adjust the Hydor Slim Skim Nano. Magnetic suction mounts make it easy to position the skimmer anywhere in the tank, and the collection cup has a rubber O-ring (actually, it’s square, but I guess we still call it a “ring”) that made it easy to control the level of skimmate. The bubbles produced were very fine, and they did a great job of attracting the nasty organics. The collection cup was easy to remove and to clean, and it could be repositioned accurately. The compact Hydor Slim Skim Nano fit well into the small aquarium and provided all of the filtration that was needed. During the testing period, I never had any ammonia or nitrite, and nitrates were at an acceptably low level.
The Hydor Slim Skim Nano is the best protein skimmer that I have tested for use in a small marine tank. The small footprint of the skimmer makes it easy to install in any small marine tank, and its efficiency is impressive. The pump produces very fine bubbles and uses only 4 watts. If you want a small protein skimmer for a small marine tank, the Hydor Slim Skim Nano is definitely one to consider.
