A beloved dog got a beautiful send-off Saturday after hundreds of dog owners and lovers joined him on his final walk along his favorite beach.

Walnut the Whippet’s health had been deteriorating for months when his owner, Mark Woods of Newquay, England, made the difficult decision to have him put to sleep. In a recent interview, Woods said Walnut had difficulty walking, constantly fell down and couldn’t get back up, couldn’t feed himself and needed assistance going to the bathroom.

But before he said goodbye, Woods wanted to take the 18-year-old pooch for a walk along Porth Beach in Newquay, and he asked on Facebook if others would like to join them.

“I would love it if dog lovers/owners and friends would join us for a celebration of Walnut on his favourite Porth Beach,” he wrote. “He has had an incredible life and having reached the grand age of 18 is ready for his final sleep. Hope to see you on Saturday.”

The response was a testament to how supportive dog people are.

On Nov. 12 at 9:30 a.m., a large crowd of people and dogs gathered on the beach to join Woods and Walnut on their final walk together.

Walnut was too weak to walk, so Woods had to carry him.

Those who couldn’t attend left messages of love and support on Woods’ Facebook post, which has been shared more than 2,000 times. Many promised to take their dogs out for a walk in their own neighborhood at the same time as Walnut’s final walk.

Woods confirmed on Facebook later on Saturday afternoon that Walnut had died. He also thanked the people who joined him on the walk.

“I am writing this post because I owe it to everyone who has supported myself, my family and most importantly Walnut,” he wrote on Facebook. “Thank you to the hundreds of people that attended the walk this morning and to all those that had their own walks with their beloved pets at 9.30am all around the world.”

RIP Walnut.
