Stars show their support for dog-friendly entertainment and news media for the 21st annual Genesis Awards.

The 21st annual Genesis Awards, which honor the entertainment and news media for showcasing animal protection issues, will air on Monday, July 23, 2007, for the first time on AmericanLife TV Network.

Celebrity presenters include Amy Smart, Bill Maher, James Cromwell, and Wendie Malick. Also appearing in this year’s show are Ellen Degeneres, Sean Astin, Emily Deschanel, Linda Blair and Wolfgang Puck.

“Happy Feet,” “Charlotte’s Web,” “Larry King Live,” “The Simpsons,” “60 Minutes,” PBS’ “Nature” series are among this year’s nominees in 18 eclectic categories spanning film, TV drama, comedy, children’s programming, documentary and print.

Beverly Kaskey, the director of HSUS office in Hollywood, says last year saw an abundance of positive portrayals of animals in the media. “The unprecedented volume of material from 2006 has enabled us to have nominations for the first time in our 21-year history,” she says. “This is a sure sign that animal issues are of increasing relevance, emerging naturally as part of the growing attention to the plight of animals and the natural world.”

Long-time animal advocate Sir Paul McCartney will be recognized with the first-ever Wyler Award, named in honor of Genesis Awards founder and former Broadway star Gretchen Wyler, for using his celebrity to draw attention to animal issues.

The Genesis Awards will air Monday, July 23, 2007, at 8:00 p.m. EST/PST on AmericanLife TV Network.
