Date: June 30, 2008
Time: 2:20 AM
Location: Melissa Kauffman’s house

Sprey has to go to the bathroom. I wonder how she woke me up (I’m a heavy sleeper) while I stumble out of bed and open the back door so they can go out. Tampa, the puppy, decides it’s a great time to play.

Time: 6 AM
Carlisle, Melissa’s cockatiel, wakes up.

Decides to greet the day with a “Chirp, chirp, chirp. Twreeeeeeeeeet.”

Carlisle does this at least 20 times.

Time: 6:10 AM
T.K., my parrotlet, wakes up.

Decides to greet the day with a “Tweet, tweet, tweet, chirp, chirp, chirp!”

Lovebirds join in with “Chiiiiirp!”

Woody, the Meyer’s parrot, joins in, but he sounds confused, going “tweeeeeeet?”

Time: 6:30 AM
Alarm goes off just after I manage to go to sleep.

Time: 6:48 AM
Melissa, whom I’m house-sitting for, calls. I think it’s my alarm again and try to turn it off. Finally realize it’s my phone ringing. She says something about the dogs. I go back to sleep.

Time: 7 AM
Alarm goes off again. I give up on trying to sleep and get up. Almost get ran over by Tampa. I am slightly afraid I will have one of these Mel moments (see her blog), minus a husband and the ‘tiels calling for me (they don’t care for me). I feed the dogs, then Woody, then my birds and then the ‘tiels. Both Natty Bird and Carlisle act like they’ve just woken up: stretching their wings and giving small, sleepy chirps. My eyebrow twitches.

Time: 8 AM
I’m running late. I turn on some Stevie Wonder and the all the birds go quiet. It is the strangest phenomenon. Do the sounds of Motown render all birds mute? Decide to test theory later.

Time: 8:30 AM
I am really running late. Bird and dog heads follow like little satellites as I run around, trying to eat breakfast and iron my shirt at the same time. It doesn’t work out real well. In the meantime, Tampa steals one of the peanuts Woody has dropped and now there are torn bits of peanut shells all over the floor.

Time: 9 AM
More running. I turn the air conditioner onto auto, because it’s supposed to be in the 100s. I fill the water bowls, check in on the ‘tiels (who are watching some cartoon with a hippo.) Trip over Tampa on the way to grab my work things. Run out the door. I am late. Woody screeches when I leave and I stop to yell “I’ll be right back!” Glad he doesn’t know what the means, because wow, would he be angry otherwise.

Time: 9:15 AM
Walk into the office. I went 12 miles at 55mph on a Monday morning in Southern California and somehow I made it to work in 15 minutes. Oh, Lady Luck, how you smile down on me …

Time: 9:30 AM
Think on how “The Parrot Life” crossed over “Life In The Bird House” (like a TV miniseries!) Giggle and then look forward to the following morning after vowing to go to sleep early tonight so I am prepared for another day in the bird house.
