Made it to Wendover which sits on the border of Nevada and Utah. Was walking through the hotel when I spotted these awesome dog-themed slot machines. Gambling has never been so dog-friendly.

What a great day! We started the morning out in Berkeley, CA with hundreds of MINI’s lined up and raring to start the first leg of MINI Takes the States benefiting the Best Friends Animal Society. Before getting into our car (a 2014 dark blue MINI with british flag mirrors) we caught up with the team at Best Friends, had a chance to speak with CEO Gregory Castle and took a close up look at the special, Best Friends MINI that they will be driving across the country. We also of course said hello to all of the dogs and their owners and checked out the “Bulldog Bar,” a doggie lounge area complete with beds, water bowls and of course plenty of treats!

This weekend Mini Cooper is kicking off MINI Takes the States, a bi-annual drive across the country. This year they’re driving in the name of rescue and we’ll be along for the ride!
From July 26 through August 10, MINI USA, hundreds of MINI owners, dog co-pilots and the awesome team at Best Friends Animal Society will be hitting the open road, spreading an important message about saving pets.
The rally kicks off in San Francisco and will cross 18 states and 15 cities, ending in Boston. At each of the 15 stops, Best Friends will put up a tent where people can learn what they can do to help end the killing of over 9,000 pets in America’s shelters each day.
While dogs have always been an important part of this event (and MINI- have you seen the Bulldog mascot?), this year’s rally, is really all about the dogs. Over 2,200 people and more than 100 pets will be taking part in the event. The coast-to-coast drive will feature several awesome dog-friendly events, dog rescue education and will include stops with dog adoptions.
One of the highlights of the trip will be the stop in Wendover, Utah (Best Friends home state) for the celebration of the organizations 30th birthday. The party will include a pet parade and lookalike contest (with any combination of lookalike welcome: pets and their people, people and their cars, pets and cars – you get the idea- it’s going to be amazing).
And if this isn’t all exciting enough, Best Friends will receive a $10,000 donation from registration fees and the staff will be along for the ride in a Best Friends–wrapped MINI, sharing the message to Save Them All.
“We know from our research that 63 percent of MINI owners have pets, and 40 percent of those are dogs; that’s a key reason we chose Best Friends as the charitable partner for the rally this year,” says Patrick McKenna, head of product planning and events at MINI USA.
And from July 26-29 yours truly will be driving along too! As a forever dog lover and a long time MINI owner, this trip really couldn’t get any better. For those of you who aren’t familiar with MINI Cooper, MINI people can be compared to the dog-people of cars, we accessorize, tell stories, show off pictures, go on adventures and talk about the car like it’s one of the family. Add in some dog-loving MINI drivers and it’s sure to be the best time ever.
If you’re driving along let us know! And if you can’t make the drive check out the nearest stop!
Three of the rally location stops: Albuquerque, New Mexico, Memphis, Tennessee and Buffalo, New York, will be hosting weekend adoptions of pets from Best Friends No More Homeless Pets Network partners. With any luck, they’ll drive off in a MINI with their new family.
Follow me on the road. I’ll be posting videos, photos, stories and more as I make the drive from San Francisco to Utah, so be sure to follow DogFancy on Facebook and check in for updates on Twitter @dogeditor and @huggme.
