Help for Wayward Cats

The CATS for Cats fundraiser in Los Angeles combined celebrities and a cause.

It was all about the cats at the Orpheum Theatre in downtown Los Angeles last weekend. Managing Editor Annie Shirreffs attended the CATS for Cats charity event organized by Kitty Bungalow Charm School for Wayward Cats.

The show, a reimagining of the musical “CATS,” featured an all-volunteer cast including celebrities such as Fred Willard (“Best in Show”), Owain Yeoman (“The Mentalist”), Jean Louisa Kelly (“Yes, Dear”), Ioan Gruffudd (“Horrible Bosses”), Keith David (“There’s Something About Mary”) and many others.

Kitty Bungalow Charm School for Wayward Cats began when Shawn Simons moved into her 100-year-old craftsman home in Los Angeles, only to discover a number of stray feral cats living in her shed. After several litters of kittens, Simons began her own studies on the socialization of feral kittens and trap-neuter-return. After fixing her own colony, she reached out to other colonies in South Los Angeles. In 2009, she received nonprofit status and continues to dedicate her time and resources to ending the proliferation of homeless kittens, providing socialization services for feral kittens and placing them in loving forever homes, and sterilizing feral cats throughout the city of Los Angeles.
