Heart disease affects many dogs, especially older ones and certain breeds. You can’t control all the factors that influence your dog’s heart health, but learning about common canine cardiac diseases will help you recognize and deal with them if they occur. Early diagnosis and treatment, along with following heart-healthy practices, can give you and your best friend more quality time together.

Heart diseases fall into two broad categories: those that are present at birth (congenital) and those that develop after birth (acquired). It’s important to understand that a dog can have a genetic predisposition for either type.
