‘Greatest American Dog’ Is TV’s Top Dog

Premiere of dog reality series wins its time period in viewers, key demographics.

The premiere of CBS’s new reality series “Greatest American Dog” won its time period in viewers and key demographics, according to preliminary Nielsen live plus same day ratings for Thursday, July 10.

During the first episode on Thursday night, as the 12 teams of dogs and owners arrived at the Agoura Hills, Calif., mansion, the owners quickly began to size up the competition. They first battled in a Dog Bone Competition titled “Musical Chairs,” which rewarded the winning team with the luxury Dog Bone Suite. The winning team was also given the power to banish one team to the Dog House, which is a small, unassuming structure on the grounds of the Canine Academy.

The teams also competed in the first Best In Show Competition titled “Doggies Got Talent.” Their performances were evaluated by the three judges, including Allan Reznik, who serves as DogChannel expert and Editor-at-Large of DOG FANCY. The trio of judges then decided on the first team to be expelled from Canine Academy.

Following the airing of the first episode, Reznik chatted with dog lovers and fans of the show on DogChannel’s message boards Friday morning. He answered visitors’ questions about the dogs’ interactions with one another, what the owners were really like, and why he thought the eliminated team should have gone home. Reznik will be chatting live on DogChannel’s message boards every Friday morning following each new episode.

Audiences will have the chance to watch the 12 dogs and their owners move in to the Canine Academy mansion, evaluate their competitors, and compete for the luxury Dog Bone Suite, during an encore presentation of the premiere episode of “Greatest American Dog,” on a special night, Saturday, July 12 (8 p.m., ET/PT) on CBS.
