It was a picture-perfect summer day when Jonathan Hardman, his friends and his dog, Rambo, reached the summit of Mount Bierstadt in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. But when the group of 13 hikers started to descend the mountain, the weather took a turn for the severe, with hail and sudden, violent thunderstorms, Hardman told KUSA.
Then lightning and tragedy appeared in equal measure. Hardman was struck by a bolt of lightning and two other hikers suffered serious injuries, but doctors believe that they’re alive today because Rambo was there to shield them from the worst of it.
“My doctors told me that [Rambo] shared that electric charge with me, because he was right next to me,” Hardman told KUSA. Sadly, Rambo died on the mountain, making the ultimate sacrifice for his owner.
Hardman posted about the ordeal on his Facebook page.
