Spending Friday nights socializing homeless animals and cleaning their cages is not a normal activity for a teenager, nor is fostering orphaned kittens. But they are for 18-year-old Alyssa Kane. Because of her tireless volunteer efforts to help shelter animals and to teach children about animal-welfare issues, Humane Society Youth chose her as the 2008 Humane Teen of the Year. She hopes that the example she sets, as well as her outreach efforts, will make fostering and helping homeless animals a normal pastime for kids.
