Ferrets As Pets For Children

Can children less than 13 years old care for a ferret?

Can children less than 13 years old care for a ferret?

Q: Are ferrets good pets for children under the age of 13?

A: Any child under the age of 13 is not a suitable solo caregiver for any animal. Ferrets require supervised playtime outside of their cage daily, regular cage cleaning, daily litter scooping, and food.

All of these tasks should be done with an adult present to make sure nothing is forgotten. A child can certainly be jointly responsible for ferret care, but an adult must also be responsible.

A ferret illness or injury should be dealt with by an adult. Very young children may also be too rough when they play with a ferret, which can cause an injury to the ferret or prompt the ferret to bite.
