Fashion-Forward Ferrets

With patience and a proper fit, you can dress your fuzzy in dandy -- and practical -- duds.

Fashionable ferrets at the Massachusetts Ferret Friends' annual fundraiserIt is 10 a.m. on a brisk fall day, and dozens of ferret owners scurry and hurry to dress their furry pets for Massachusetts Ferret Friends’ annual fundraiser at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Easton, Mass. This year’s theme, Space Ferrets: Mongo Skywalker’s Intergalactic Ferret Frolic, inspired out-of-this-world costumes for ferrets — from Princess Leah gowns with braided-and-twirled buns to mini Martian invaders and everything in between.

Why are these ferret fanciers scrambling? Not to march in a parade or be first in line to show off their dressed pets. They’re rushing to outfit their fuzzies and photograph them for the costume contest before the little guys wiggle and squiggle out of their interplanetary duds.

“Ferrets don’t particularly like to wear clothes to begin with,” laughed Phyllis Spy, president of Massachusetts Ferret Friends, based in Plymouth. “So what you try to do is simulate something that will give them the same amount of freedom of movement that they would have if they weren’t dressed. Even so, by the time you get the costume on, they’re slithering out of it.”
