Housebound out in the country during a New Jersey snowstorm, Joanne Alstede sent her three sons out to play in the snow with their Saint Bernard Misty while she shoveled the front walk.
Suddenly, as if in slow motion, Alstede saw two things happen simultaneously. Her 4-year-old son Eric running out from the nearby woods toward the road, and a snowplow barreling down the road, the driver unaware of the preschooler because of the tall snow drifts. Alstede threw her shovel aside, calling out in a panic, knowing she couldn’t possibly reach her son in time.
