Instead of overlooking Chester and choosing a puppy, Nicole Elliot decided to adopt the terminally ill dog and care for him in his final days.

All too often in this world, the old gets traded in for the new, and older dogs are sadly no exception. Caring for a senior pet is not always easy, but one woman in Georgia decided she was more than up to the task.

Nicole Elliot of Columbus, Georgia, was scrolling through photos on the Animal Ark Rescue’s Facebook page when she found a post about Chester, ABC News reports.

Chester was suffering from terminal cancer and had been surrendered to a high-kill shelter by his previous owners, according to ABC News. Animal Ark Rescue got him out of there and was seeking a potential owner to shower him with love during his final days.

Elliot made a bucket list for Chester and showed up to adopt him the next day before the shelter opened. She fell in love with the little fella immediately and has been documenting their adventures together on a Facebook page she created called “Chester’s Final Journey.”

Since being adopted by Elliot, Chester has been showered with new toys, has visited a water stream and had a nice hot dog lunch from a nearby restaurant.

“He’s playful at times, but I’m sure with the age and the cancer it slows him down,” Elliot told ABC News. “He is just very sweet and he soaks up any love that you give him.

Elliot’s efforts to raise awareness around the fact that all dogs need love, especially the ones with not much time left, have certainly been successful. Also, she’s Chester’s hero.
