“Dude, Where’s My Ferret” Will Conquer New Frontiers For Filmmaker

A new ferret film is in the works, and "Dude, Where’s My Ferret?" marks a couple of firsts for veteran filmmaker Alison Parker.

Krusty the ferret will be playing Ferret Bueller in the film, along with five other back-up ferrets.

The time has come for a stoner comedy featuring a ferret — at least that’s the thinking of filmmaker Alison Parker. The Vancouver-based director and producer has been bringing short ferret films to life since 2011. Her latest effort in the works is Dude, Where’s My Ferret, and it’s the first time she’s tackling a comedy.

“This will be my fourth ferret film,” Parker said. “I’m excited to dive back into the process, yes, but I never really left. I just finished a massive marketing campaign for Santa’s Little Ferrets. January has been all about polishing the script for DWMF. I’ve had this script in the works for almost a year.”

Dude, Where’s My Ferret? naturally brings up thoughts of the comedy Dude, Where’s My Car? from 2000 starring Ashton Kutcher, Seann William Scott and Jennifer Garner. But the resemblance ends at the title — well, that and the fact that there will be scenes in the film with marijuana.

The official synopsis states that the main character, Skeezix, is entering his marijuana plant in a Colorado Cannabis contest that has a prize of $1,000. His girlfriend arrives to drive him to the contest, bringing her pet ferret, Ferret Bueller. She suddenly leaves, which puts Skeezix in the position of trying to get his plant to the contest and take care of the mischievous Ferret Bueller at the same time.

Parker’s three previous ferret movies (Jake And Jasper: A Ferret Tale, The Magic Ferret and Santa’s Little Ferrets) have all been heartwarming, with the first two focusing on children with a special bond to their ferret. She said her biggest challenge with Dude, Where’s My Ferret? is making it for adults, not for a child or family audience. And there are other differences.

“This is my first comedy. This will be my first time making a movie with no children,” she said. “The only thing that’s old hat to me is the ferret. There’s a lot of hilarious ferret hijinx that all ferret owners will be able to relate to. I am so excited to challenge myself and to take a risk. I want to make a movie that has audiences at film festivals laughing their asses off. I’m very confident that this is that movie.”

The writing team for Dude, Where’s My Ferret? is Scott and Paula Merrow, the same team who worked with Parker on The Magic Ferret and Santa’s Little Ferrets

Parker plans to begin filming in April. She is still working on getting together the cast and crew. The ferrets have been cast though. She said six ferrets will be used to play Ferret Bueller, the ferret in the film.

Parker said plans are for the short film to be released digitally first, not on DVD as her other three movies were. It will be available as a digital download, video on demand and other formats. DVDs should be available later. And as with Santa’s Little Ferrets, where she introduced merchandise related to the movie (bow ties and ornaments), there will be merchandise for sale related to Dude, Where’s My Ferret?. Pipes will be one item, and she hopes for others.

For her past three ferret movies, Parker has used crowdfunding through IndieGoGo to finance the projects. Each raised more than $10,000, so odds are that a crowdfunding campaign for Dude, Where’s My Ferret? is coming in the near future. Jake And Jasper and The Magic Ferret went on the film festival circuit and both won multiple awards. Updates about the film are being posted on Dude, Where’s My Ferret? Facebook page.
