Dogs Celebrate International Bacon Day

The Beggin’ Bacon Bash in Cincinnati featured dog costume contests, agility and more.

Beggin’, a brand of bacon-flavored dog treats made by Nestlé Purina PetCare, hosted its first-ever Beggin’ Bacon Bash for dogs in Cincinnati on Sept. 4 in honor of International Bacon Day. Hundreds of dogs turned out for the inaugural event, according to the Cincinnati-based company.

“Because dogs — and their owners — share a hilarious obsession for bacon, Beggin’ created an exciting, dog-friendly event for the entire family that’s all about bacon,” said Stephen Trammel, an assistant brand manager with Nestlé. “There was no better way to celebrate International Bacon Day.”

The Beggin’ Bacon Bash featured an array of activities for dogs and their humans. Dogs could participate in the canine costume contest and take part in a Guinness Book world record attempt for the “loudest group bark.” Humans got a chance to participate in an All Pro Eating-sanctioned bacon eating contest, won by Mark “The Human Vacuum” Lyle of Columbus, Ohio.

Dog lovers were also able to watch agility demonstrations put on by the Purina Incredible Dog Team.

The event also featured a special cooking demonstration by Kevin Gillespie, a finalist on Bravo TV network’s “Top Chef” reality show.

“I’m a huge fan of the pig, and I’m crazy about bacon in particular,” Gillespie said. “I enjoyed sharing some of my favorite pork dishes with other bacon lovers, and I hope that I inspired them to embrace pork within their own cooking.”
