We all know dogs are loyal. They’ll do just about anything for their humans, their cat friends and their best dog buddies.
Take Hero, for example. He was a stray dog living in Durban, South Africa, with his dog BFF. Unfortunately, the two dogs made their way onto some train tracks at the Shallcross station in Chatsworth, resulting in one of them getting hit. Inspector Moloi was called to the scene, SPCA Durban reported on its Facebook page. When Moloi arrived, he found Hero taking care of the injured dog.
“Security officers in the area reported that they had seen the dog going out to look for food and bringing it back to his injured friend,” the Facebook post continued. “He stayed close by as Inspector Moloi carried his canine companion to safety, watching over her and ensuring no further harm was caused.”
Sadly, the most humane act was to euthanize the injured dog, since she had suffered a severe spinal injury. But Hero’s story didn’t end with his friend’s passing. According to Independent Online, hundreds of requests came in to adopt the stray dog. The Connor family from Mount Moreland got to take him home. Shiri Connor told Independent Online that she had a dream about Hero after seeing the Facebook post and the following day set out to visit him.
“I told my three children on the way to school that I had to meet the dog as his story really touched me,” Connor said. “His story was sad and beautiful at the same time. It was such a special moment. He was all I ever imagined him to be and Hero will be a great addition to our family.”
Hero may have lost a friend, but he gained a family.
