A Chesapeake Bay Retriever named Smoke has set a new dock jumping record of 29 feet 1 inch at this year’s United Kennel Club Premier held in Richmond, Ind.
“I was overwhelmed with emotion [on hearing we broke the record],” owner-handler Melissa Ness, of Ramona, Calif., says. “I could only cry and hug Smoke. He is the most awesome dog.”
Ness, a longtime competitor who has taken top titles in dog sports such as obedience and herding, adopted the champion after he was relinquished by an Arizona family for being “too much dog.”
“He thinks playtime is 24 hours a day,” she says. “He is never without a toy in his mouth and never too tired to try and convince someone to throw it!”
So what’s up next for the pair – besides a visit to the “Late Show with David Letterman”?
“Competition to Smoke is all about having fun and we hope to continue to reach for the titles,” she says.
