When members of the RYCC Savoia, a sports club in Italy, went sailing in the Gulf of Naples, the last thing they probably expected to see was a puppy swimming in the middle of the sea. The poor thing was found swimming for dear life in the cold waters and against the waves. He was about a mile from shore.
RYCC Savoia’s director, Massimiliano Cappa, told La Repubblica, “We approached; we were sailing and maneuvering was not easy. He was visibly exhausted, his legs almost paralyzed by the cold. He trembled and wept.”
The video is both heartbreaking and heartwarming. Seeing the puppy struggle in desperation to reach the boat was difficult to watch, but seeing the sailors pull him out of the cold water and do whatever they could to warm him was wonderful. Take a look:
Unsure of how the dog got in the water in the first place, the group called a rescue boat and had him brought to dry land. It was there that it was discovered the puppy’s name was Noodle and that he’d been reported missing after falling off a ferry on its way to Ischia, an island about 20 miles west of Naples. According to The Dodo, Mario di Meglio, Noodle’s human, said he slipped out of his leash and fell overboard. He alerted the ferry’s crew immediately; however, they refused to stop, saying Noodle likely drowned.
The puppy had been swimming in the water for 30 minutes before he was rescued. He’s been reunited with di Meglio and is doing well. It has been reported that the ferry company is investigating the incident and has issued an apology.
