Dog Photo Contest Helps Pit Bulls

Pit Bull Rescue San Diego welcomes photo entries for 2011 calendar.

Bully breeds are known as the clowns of the canine world — and it’s not just because of their big, goofy grins. Now Pit Bull Rescue San Diego is celebrating these fun-loving pooches with the group’s first-ever “Pittie the Fool” calendar photo contest.

“Our theme, while a bit kitschy, is built around the idea that so many people who don’t know see pit bulls as these grumpy, evil beings,” says Kim Smith of PBRSD. “Most pit bull owners will be quick to tell you what ‘fools’ their dogs really are.”

Proceeds from the contest go to PBRSD’s medical fund, which helps dogs like Tonka, who recently had to have his leg amputated. Tonka was abandoned to run the streets and was hit by a car. A local shelter contacted PBRSD, and Tonka is now recovered and ready to be adopted.

“Sometimes medical expenses are the only thing in the way of the adoptability of a dog,” Smith says. “Tonka is a perfect example of this. He is an exceptional dog in every other way except that he now only has three legs.”

To enter the photo contest, visit http://www.pbrsd.com/photo through Aug. 15. A $5 donation is suggested for each entry, and votes are $1 each. The PBRSD’s 2011 calendar goes on sale in late October at http://www.cafepress.com/pitbullsandiego.
