The Natural Dog Company, Inc. has issued a recall of its Tremenda Sticks pet chews. The 12-inch pet chews came in 12-ounce bags. The Windsor, Colorado-based pet food company has issued the recall due to possible salmonella contamination, which was noted after an inspection by the Colorado Department of Agriculture revealed a sample with the presence of salmonella. The production of the product has ceased until The Natural Dog Company and FDA find the source of the issue.
The recalled product was distributed to retail stores in Washington, Utah, Ohio, North Carolina, Montana, Missouri, Illinois, Florida, Colorado and California.

Healthy individuals who have come in contact with salmonella by handling the contaminated product and not thoroughly washing their hands or surfaces the product was on may experience fever, abdominal cramping, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, vomiting and nausea. Though rare, salmonella can also cause urinary tract symptoms, eye irritation, muscle pain, endocarditis, arterial infections and arthritis. Individuals who have come in contact with the Tremenda Sticks product and are experiencing any of these symptoms should contact their healthcare provider.
Pets who have consumed the contaminated pet chews may have symptoms that include abdominal pain, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, decreased appetite, fever, lethargy and vomiting. Pets not exhibiting symptoms may still be a carrier; carriers can infect humans and other animals. Consumers whose dogs have eaten the recalled pet chews and are exhibiting any of these symptoms should contact their veterinarian.
No illnesses have been reported to date as a result of the Tremenda Sticks.
Consumers who have purchased the recalled product should stop using it immediately. Any unused portion may be returned at the place of purchase for a full refund.
