Living With Kids and DogsWithout Losing Your Mind, by dog trainer and mother Colleen Pelar, received the Humane Society of the United States Compassionate Care Award.
Published in 2005 by C&R Publishing, the book addresses issues parents face managing daily interactions between dogs and kids.
Children and dogs can be wonderful friends, but the potential for problems is huge, says Pelar. I hope that my book will help more parents keep their kids safe from dog bites. When parents know how to supervise and when to intervene, the bite statistics will improve. Too many children are bitten because parents don’t know the warning signs.
Nearly 2.8 million children are bitten by dogs each year, according to Pelar.
In addition to bite prevention tips, subject areas include introducing infants to the family dog, Pointers for teens driving dog passengers, advice on choosing a family dog, and recommendations on handling a dogs death.
