More than 1,000 cats and dogs will seek homes at the NKLA Adoption Weekend Sat., Nov. 9, and Sun., Nov. 10, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles.
Best Friends Animal Society leads the NKLA (No-Kill Los Angeles) mission of turning L.A. into a No-Kill City by 2017. Combining NKLA coalition partners and passionate animal lovers at the NKLA Adoption Weekend gives pets the best odds of finding families to house them.
Organizers also say the event will be fun-filled. “The NKLA Adoption Weekend gives Angelenos a festive venue to meet incredible shelter pets. It’s really the ideal atmosphere for finding your new best friend,” said Marc Peralta, executive director of Best Friends Animal Society – Los Angeles and NKLA. “Our goal is to match prospective adopters with the perfect pet and find a great home for every homeless cat, dog, kitten and puppy that comes to our event.”

Several Best Friends Animal Society celebrity supporters will entertain at the free, family-friendly event, while guests can enjoy food from L.A. food trucks, such as Yalla Truck, Del’s Lemonade, Mac-O-Licious, Son of a Bun, Mandoline Grill, Kool Haus and Waffles De Liege.
But the real stars will be the adoptable pets from a variety of local shelters and rescues, including LA Animal Services, Best Friends Pet Adoption Center in Mission Hills, Kitten Rescue, Wags N Walks, Angel City Pit Bulls, Karma Rescue, National Brittany Rescue & Adoption Network, Rescue Me Pups, Dogs without Borders, Two Dog Farms, Kitten Bungalow Charm School for Wayward Cats, and many more. Pets from both city and county shelters will be available with adoption fees as low as $25. All pets are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and micro-chipped.
The NKLA Adoption Weekend is one of Best Friends’ “Super Adoption” events, which launched 14 years ago and average hundreds of adoptions per event. In May 2013, more than 400 pets found homes in just three days at the NKLA Super Adoption.
Adopters at the NKLA Adoption Weekend will receive a free starter kit with dog food or cat food and treats, toys, collars, leashes, coupons and more. In addition to PetSmart Charities other sponsors include Natural Balance Pet Foods, Banfield Pet Hospital, Mammoth Pet, and Dog for Dog.
“The sad truth is that an estimated 9,000 dogs and cats are killed in U.S. shelters every day,” Peralta said. “Adoption is a key component in bringing that number down to zero. Watching the community join forces to put on the biggest adoption event in Los Angeles is so inspiring. It’s only by working together that we will Save Them All and turn L.A. into NKLA.”
