From the Archives of Dog World: Enjoy this all-access pass to dog history from the pages of the longest published dog magazine. This content remains in its original form and reflects the language and views of its time. Health and behavior information evolves and only the most current advice should be followed.
The curse of the dog fancy has been and is distemper. This dreaded disease kills more dogs than do all other maladies together. At times it sweeps along like a plague, mocking the best efforts of doctors.
The exact diagnosis of distemper has not yet been discovered. Breeder after breeder has had his entire kennels taken away over night by the dog plague. Fortunes have been lost by the havoc of the malady.
Distemper must be fought and banished. It must not continue to take its costly toll year after year. The dog fancy is praying for relief. An excellent way out would be for it to help answer its own prayers.
DOG WORLD believes that a thorough scientific study of any problem brings some solution in the end and changes conditions for the better. Therefore, it asks all breeders, fanciers, and dog lovers, wherever located, to wage a campaign against distemper, to make researches into the nature of the disease, and to carry on the fight until it is won.
DOG WORLD has established a fund known as ELIMINATION OF DISTEMPER FUND, and placed its name on the list of contributors for $100. Every person who has the dog fancy at heart is implored to contribute to this cause. Whether your donations are large and small, they will be welcomed and acknowledged in these columns.
Consider that a donation is really not that but that it is an investment that will repay itself many fold later. If distemper is removed as a scourge the benefits to the fancy will be untold for magnitude. Send in your money to Treasurer of ELIMINATION OF DISTEMPER FUND, care Dog World, 102 North Wells Street, Chicago. Do it now.
