Talk about a compelling letter of recommendation… and of love.

This spring, an anonymous man turned up at the Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center in Maryland with his late mother’s cat. However, what made this a special surrender is that, along with the cat, came a note her former owner wrote to whoever would be the orange feline’s new family, reports The Huffington Post.

“Dear Friend,” the note begins. “Thank you for adopting my friend, Susie.”

The woman went on to share her almost five years with her precious Susie and how — even though it took the kitty a little time to get used to her Mom — the two soon became close friends and loving companions.

“Susie is afraid of everyone and everything,” the letter continues. “It took her six to eight months to realize I am her friend… I hope you enjoy Susie as much as I have.”

Katherine Zenzano, community outreach coordinator for the animal services center, told The Huffington Post that after Susie’s former owner died, her son came to the shelter in May, unable to care for the cat due to pet restrictions at his rental. Zenzano added that beyond what the letter said, the son didn’t have much information.

“We’re left to guess so much,” Zenzano told HuffPo. “But because of the note, we can more easily imagine this sweet life that the two of them shared.”

Shelter staff reportedly worked hard to make Susie feel comfortable because as expected, her new surroundings spooked her. Since arriving, however, Zenzano said the cat has come around – now her only worry is that Susie will get “too comfortable.”

“She’s a sensitive girl and she lost the most important person to her,” Zenzano told The Huffington Post, adding she hopes Susie’s new family will provide the love and patience she previously experienced.

“She needs another gentle soul to rescue her.”
