Cute Cat Lil Bub Makes It Big

"Lil Bub & Friendz” debuts at the Tribeca Film Festival and shares the big impact of this tiny kitty.

The 2013 Tribeca Film Festival in New York City brings some famous internet cats to the big screen this week. Grumpy Cat, Nyan Cat, Keyboard Cat and, of course, Lil Bub, all appear in the new movie “Lil Bub & Friendz.”

Lead cat Lil Bub captured the hearts of cat fans last year in highly shared online photos. She’s genetically a bit different from other cats, which has given Bub big eyes, a small chin and diminutive stature – a look some people call “Perma-kitten.”

The film, created by media company VICE, started out as a short video project to bring Lil Bub to the Internet Cat Video Festival in August 2012. Her videos were not on display, but her presence in the audience drew crowds of adoring onlookers who wanted a photo or simply a chance to get up close to this charming, tiny kitty.

“It was pretty easy to decide on Bub – she’s one of the cutest animals I’ve ever seen in my entire life and her story is truly inspiring,” said direct Juliette Eisner about her subject. She and co-director Andy Capper went to cover the festival with Lil Bub, but decided to expand on Lil Bub’s story after seeing the effusive response she elicited.

Eisner experience the same initial feeling. She had never met Lil Bub in person before the project began, and her favorite scene from the movie is the first encounter between her and Lil Bub.

“It’s totally unstaged and you can really see what type of effect she has on people when they first see her.” Eisner called it a “punch-in-the-stomach type reaction.”

Eisner believes audiences will feel the same belly aches when they watch the film – from laughter. Although there are emotional moments, she anticipates more happy responses from folks who meet Lil Bub, either in-person or on-screen.

The 12th annual Tribeca Film Festival began Apr. 17 and ends Apr. 28, 2013. “Lil Bub & Friendz” screens for free Apr. 20 at the Tribeca Drive-In at the World Financial Center Plaza in New York City, and at local theatres Apr. 23 and 25 for ticket-holders.
