Considering Breeding Hamsters

Things to consider before you begin breeding hamsters.

Q: I’m considering breeding hamsters. I used to have a Roborovski hamster when I was younger. Is there a specific hamster species that is best to start off with? What things should I consider when I’m deciding on a hamster species to breed?

A: Start by determining why you want to breed hamsters. There are still more hamsters than there are lifelong homes for them all, especially in the United States. It can be quite costly, especially if you’re not prepared to have cages for every baby hamster you are unable to place in a new home. Most pet stores buy from wholesalers, so your options for placing the young hamster might be quite limited.

You might consider getting involved in hamster fostering, as many animal shelters don’t have appropriate housing for hamsters put up for adoption. If you are interested in breeding hamsters to show, contact hamster associations like the California Hamster Association or any of the hamster associations in the UK to find other reputable breeders who can give you some guidance.
