Children? Book Educates on Bird Ownership

New children? book focuses on educating about life of parrots in the wild and captivity

The Lily Sanctuary and Parrots First are teaming up to launch the new children’s book Here, There and Everywhere by Mira Tweti, on Sunday, December 16, 2007 in Santa Monica, Calif.

Here, There and Everywhere is a story about Sreeeeeeeet the rainbow lorikeet and his adventure from his home in the wild of New Guinea to life in the city as a pet to 9-year-old Peter. Tweti said this is a fun story that also touches on the importance of educating children on the responsibilities of bird ownership. “One of the biggest issues is that people don’t have enough education before they get a bird,” Tweti said.

Tweti said the story was inspired from her own pet lorikeet, while he was flying around the room one day. She wanted to create a story about lorikeets and educate children about life with birds. “This story entertains, educates and enlightens children to life with parrots and their needs,” Tweti said.

A great thing about this story is that it appeals to a wide range of children. “Older children can learn about parrots in the wild, and younger children have a fun time with the story,” Tweti said. “To read the book you have to squawk like a lorikeet.”

In theme with the story, Rose Levine, founder of Parrots First, and Daniel Hill, founder of The Lily Sanctuary, are bringing in parrots from their rescues as they share with guests their experience caring for and working with rescue birds in a shelter.

The book’s illustrator, Lisa Brady, is donating two original pieces for a silent auction. The proceeds from the silent auction will benefit Parrots First and The Lily Sanctuary. A portion of proceeds from the book go toward supporting parrot rescues and conservation programs, including the Indonesian Parrot Project.

Celebrities will be in attendance reading the story, and include actor Beau Bridges and music artist Mystic.

The initial launch is the first in a series of upcoming programs and events surrounding the book and the education of parrots in the wild and as pets.
