Chester, the terminally ill dog who was recently adopted by a truly amazing woman, has passed away.

The sweet pooch lost his battle with cancer on Friday, according to his owner, Nicole Elliot of Columbus, Georgia. Elliot  adopted Chester last month after he had been surrendered to a high-kill shelter, and she pledged to fill his final days with love.

“I am so sad to tell everyone that my sweet baby Chester has left this world,” Elliot wrote on the Facebook page Chester’s Final Journey. “I am heartbroken, but at the same time I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. I held him until his last breath and then some. I told him it was ok to let go, and how loved he was. I know without a doubt Chester died knowing that he mattered. He knew love.”

I have written and erased this post several times, because I feel like once it’s up it makes it feel so final. I am so…

Despite not being together for very long, Elliot gave Chester what nobody else would — a loving family and a cozy sanctuary in which to spend his last days. He was showered with new toys, went on an outdoor excursion to a little stream and had a nice hot dog lunch from a restaurant.

Elliot hopes Chester’s story will raise awareness about senior pet adoption and the fact that older dogs can bring just as much joy to people’s lives as cute and tiny puppies. We think it’s safe to say that goal has been achieved.
