A couple of weeks ago, I saw a kid who was probably nine or 10 roll down the street on a skateboard, wearing a backwards baseball cap and holding an iced coffee in one hand. “I have never been, nor will I ever be, that cool,” I said to myself. And that’s the same feeling I had looking at these pictures from the 10th Annual Unleashed By Petco Surf Dog Competition.
The competition was held in Imperial Beach, California, over the weekend and featured more than 50 dogs hanging 20, as Petco put it, on their own surfboards. Proceeds from the event benefit the San Diego Humane Society.
The judges evaluated dogs in different size categories, and there were some repeat winners this year. Eskimo, a 15-pound Toy American Eskimo, took the small dog division for the second straight year. On the other side of the spectrum, a Boxer named Hanzo and Kalani, a Golden Retriever, took the tandem division for the third consecutive year. They each also won their division, Hanzo taking the XL category and Kalani winning the large.
Hanzo apparently started skateboarding when he was only eight weeks old, so it’s hard to beat that kind of experience. And he might’ve even out-cooled that kid, which makes me feel slightly better.
