Dozens of photographs, including ones by Bruce Springsteen and Herb Ritts as well as iconic depictions of celebrities like Madonna, Marilyn Monroe, and Bianca Jagger, will be auctioned to raise money for the Humane Society of New York in an online and live auction that ends April 16.
Not surprisingly, photos of dogs rule the collection. William Wegman donated one of his Weimaraner puppy portraits to the second annual event, while celebrity photographer and frequent Vanity Fair contributor Annie Leibovitz provided a portrait that depicts Wegman and one of his famous Weimeraners, Fay Wray. Bruce Weber contributed a playful photo of a Newfoundland towering over a man holding the dog’s front paws.
Several images that don’t include dogs are also expected to generate considerable interest. There’s Milton Greene’s iconic 1952 portrait of Marlene Dietrich, a 1962 Bert Stern portrait of Marilyn Monroe, and four portraits of Madonna, two of them autographed.
Online bidding continues through April 14 and culminates in a live auction on Monday, April 16, at the Baryshnikov Arts Center in New York City. To view the auction catalog or submit a bid, visit http://humanesocietyny.org/auction/.
