Cat Pictures: Matilda’s Party

Catch some snapshots of the glamorous recent part for Algonquin Hotel cat Matilda.

Over the years, CatChannel has recorded every paw print and tail flick of the famous Matilda, resident Algonquin Hotel cat. This month, she hosted a party to celebrate her return to the hotel after a five-month absence while her landmark Manhattan residence was being renovated.

The Welcome Back Matilda party was held in two locations: the famous lobby and Round Table restaurant, and in the new John Barrymore suite, named for the actor who gave the very first Algonquin cat the name of Hamlet, a role Barrymore played on Broadway at the time.

In past years, these famous show cats modeled extravagant outfits on a catwalk in front of an admiring crowd. This year, the cats dressed for the occasion and hung out with guests, allowing them to get up close and purrsonal and pet them.

“It was definitely an improvement on past years,” said Lora Carbonara, an ardent Matilda groupie. “I’ve never been able to get close enough to admire the detail on the gowns and pet the cats of course. It was wonderful. Very thoughtful of you, Matilda.”

Cats from Bidawee were available for adoption on-site. Matilda herself was an abandoned cat, left in a box on the doorstep of an animal shelter when the hotel found her and took her back to this legendary landmark.

All funds raised at the event were donated to New York Save, an organization that helps pet lovers fund expensive surgeries of their fur kids that they otherwise would not be able to afford.

Visitors to the hotel on West 44th Street in Manhattan can have their photograph taken with this Matilda if they stop by for a visit. She loves to welcome incoming guests from her vantage point on a luggage cat around 3.00 pm every afternoon. And of course you can follow her on Facebook.
