On the morning of May 25, a male cat was seen on a street in Brooklyn. Next to him was his cat supplies and litter box. A passerby snapped a photo of the sad kitty before a street sweeper scared him away.

FAT Cats, a cat advocacy group in the Flatbush area of Brooklyn, caught wind of the cat’s plight and posted a message on its Facebook page asking for help finding the abandoned kitty.

Later that afternoon, FAT Cats posted an update, thanking those who took the time to help search for the cat and expressing their belief that the cat was hiding “due to today’s heat and the amount of construction and noise on Nostrand Ave today.”

The abandoned cat was finally found on the morning of May 29.

“Here at Flatbush Area Team for Cats, we are ecstatic to give a happy update to last week’s story of Nostrand, the cat abandoned on Nostrand Ave. Numerous rescue groups, concerned neighbors and our own members made repeated sweeps of the area without success. We got reported sightings but were never able to act fast enough. Then this AM, the call came in from a local TNR advocate and cat rescuer in retirement, Karen Oh, found him in her backyard! We immediately rushed over to find, that yes indeed, it was him!” FAT Cats wrote in a Facebook post.

The cat was taken to a veterinarian, who discovered he was not microchipped. The cat received a clean bill of health, with the exception of fleas.

FAT Cats is currently contacting individuals who expressed interest in fostering and/or adopting the cat. The organization is also taking donations for the cat’s veterinary expenses, if people would like to contribute. Donations can be made here.

  • I can’t believe people anymore. I have lost faith in people because of what they are able to do to animals. These poor creatures offer unconditionally love and just ask that that you care for them back.

On the flip side I’d like to bitch slap the people that did this to the poor cat. Its not like he can move his own stuff you jack ass’es. Just 1 minute. Thats all I want. 1 minute. Everything you put that cat through I will put you through times 100 ! I will make being scared a physically quality you will never forget. I hate people !

    • As horrible as this behavior is,it makes me physically sick to my stomach, however I’m glad they didn’t do physical harm to the dear little thing… least this way, she was noticed and a series of rescue behaviors and energy was set in motion to help her……it all worked out to help her get to safety…leaving her out in the open with her belongings, actually drew attention to her adandonment circumstances…….I’ve lost faith in so many unkind people with no conscience, but there are as many or more really good people out there who love animals with all their heart

  • We have four cats and I can’t fathom a reason I would ever even considering doing something so horrific to anyone of them.

  • My cat sister is family and never once in my lifetime would I do something so despicable and low as this. Mankind has failed yet once again showing how selfish they are towards other sentient beings. Extremely disappointing and embarrassing. #Karma is real and the culprits at hand will be taken care of in due course. #animalactivist #animallover #catlover

  • I agree with everyone here. I used to volunteer for a non profit organization that strictly helps cats. I’ve seen a lot of cats given up and given up on, but certain human beings prove to be better than the rest and stand up and take care of these abused, left behind, and battered cats. When I was born, there was a six week kitten there. When I was in 5th grade, we had a cat and now as an adult,I have my own Cat. No matter the circumstances,I will always put my Azrael first because it was my decision to make him a part of my family. You just don’t walk away/abandon family for anything, especially when they’re a furbaby in my eyes.

Thank you to every one who believes that animals need to be protected and cared for. Regardless if they’re domestic or wild, they should still be treated with respect and dignity.

  • Besides the obviousness of how cruel this is, why the pandering for vet bills? You really need donations for a clean bill of health and fleas? Sounds like trying to make money of tugging at heart strings. That’s also a bit sick. The check up can’t be more than a few hundred dollars!!

  • since the cat was Ok, rescuers have to look the former IDIOT owner of this poor cat. and put them to jail file a case against him/her an animal cruelty.

  • At lease make sure the poor dear does not get owners like the previous ones he had. One more such experience will break him. I agree with the views posted here, what else can be the truth?
