A plucky dog with a resemblance to Chewbacca stole all the hearts and the top prize at the 16th annual National Dog Show presented by Purina.
Newton, a Brussels Griffon, won Best In Show at the event, which aired on NBC on Nov. 23, 2017. The little bearded dog beat out more than 2,000 other canine competitors.
“He just has marvelous breed type and attitude,” Newton’s handler, Susan Depew, told NBC Sports reporter Mary Carillo in an interview following the big win. “He just is the whole package.”
Newton won the Toy Group before advancing to the Best In Show round. The Best In Show round pits the winners of each Group category against each other. The six other Group winners who competed for Best In Show were: Noah the Portuguese Water Dog (Working Group winner), Anna the Whippet (Hound Group winner), Timmy the English Springer Spaniel (Sporting Group winner), Louie the American Staffordshire Terrier (Terrier Group winner), Babe the French Bulldog (Non-sporting Group winner) and Sophia the Old English Sheepdog (Herding Group winner).
Purina is inviting pet owners across the country to share on social media what makes their pets the best by tagging the company (@purina) and using the hashtag #DogThanking. Until Nov. 26, for every unique post shared on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram that includes @purina and #dogthanking, Purina will donate $1 (up to $50,000) to GreaterGood.org, a nonprofit organization that provides assistance to people and pets in need.
To focused on that Thanksgiving turkey to catch the National Dog Show? It will re-air on NBC on November 25 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
