A Golden Retriever named Figo is recovering from surgery after jumping out in front of a bus, but his owner is still alive because of his brave actions.
Figo’s owner, Audrey Stone, is blind, and the two of them were crossing the street in Brewster, New York, on Monday morning when the driver of a mini-school bus failed to see them — or slow down, The Journal News reports. Somehow sensing that his charge was in danger, the guide dog threw himself into the path of the bus, suffering a severe break to his front leg.
“The dog took a lot of the blow,” Brewster Police Chief John Del Gardo told The Journal News. “And he did not want to leave her side. He stood right with her. He was there to save her.”
Stone, 62, is still hospitalized with a broken ankle, a broken elbow and three fractured ribs. Thankfully, Figo, who is being monitored at a local veterinary clinic, will still be waiting when she’s released.
