According to Mark H. of Illinois, president of Bluetick Breeders of America, coonhounds probably descended from English Foxhounds who broke away from the fox-chasing pack to track and tree quarry like raccoons and black bear. As high-energy hunting dogs, Blueticks demand abundant exercise and require a strong handler, physically and mentally, Mark says. “They want to run and tree, so if you don’t have a leash on them and they spot a squirrel or cat, they’ll take off,” he says.
